Current Role
Paul specializes in Research and Development (“R&D”) tax credits, with a focus on both federal and state incentives. He has extensive experience conducting R&D tax credit analyses for companies of all sizes across a wide range of industries, identifying qualifying activities and expenses to maximize tax benefits on federal income tax returns. Paul also advises on the interaction between R&D tax credits and Section 174 capitalization and amortization rules, helping companies navigate the complexities of these provisions to ensure compliance and optimize tax outcomes.
In addition, Paul is a key member of the tax controversy team, providing support during IRS audits. He also contributes to the energy credit team, assisting organizations in evaluating and claiming tax benefits related to energy property acquisitions.

Paul is an attorney who, prior to joining Rehmann in 2023, spent seven years with a Big Four accounting firm as a senior manager in the specialty tax service practice where he provided tax credit analysis.
His clients included Fortune 500 companies in various industries such as pharmaceutical, life science, chemical, aerospace and defense, high-tech, automotive, software, consumer products, manufacturing, construction and financial services. His practice included representing R&D tax credit claims before the IRS and state taxing authorities.

As a member of the energy credit team, Paul works closely with clients across various sectors, including for-profit businesses, public entities, and tax-exempt organizations. He specializes in helping these clients leverage energy credits to maximize financial benefits. This includes strategies to reduce tax liabilities for for-profit entities or secure direct pay options, which provide cash back to public and tax-exempt organizations. Paul’s expertise ensures clients can fully capitalize on available incentives to support their energy initiatives.
