Colin D.V. McHugh, CPA

Current Role

Colin manages audit, review and agreed-upon procedure engagements. He also supervises employee benefit plan audits, including defined benefit plans and defined contribution plans, and has experience with not-for-profit audit engagements.

Colin advises on revenue recognition, lease implementation, identification of financial trends and creative solutions to complex situations. Additionally, he analyses internal controls, helping clients navigate impacts to business operations. His industry experience provides him a unique ability to identify opportunities for improving internal procedures for commercial clients, especially manufacturers, distributors, construction contractors and professional service firms.

Colin is largely involved internally at Rehmann as well, serving on the IDEA champion team (providing internal training on data and analytics tools), as well as being a member of the firm’s manufacturing and construction contractor niches, serving on the firm’s strategic planning committee, and assisting with technical assurance training firm wide.

Experience

Colin joined Rehmann in 2012 as part of our business combination with Spilman, Hills & Heidebrink Ltd, where he was an assurance associate. He has been a public accountant since 2012.

A Closer Look

• Colin has presented on revenue recognition for the Construction Financial Management Association and on “How to read financial statements” at a continuing legal education seminar. Colin also regularly speaks at several other professional education seminars.
• Colin leads Rehmann’s recruiting efforts at the University of Toledo. Additionally, his associate mentorships have been recognized by firm leaders.
• Colin is actively involved in professional and community organizations including the Ohio Society of CPAs (Young CPA Leadership Board chair – 2020) and the Erie Shores Boy Scouts Council (board member).
