2014 Tax Season to Open Jan. 31

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced plans to open the 2014 filing season on Jan. 31 and encouraged taxpayers to use e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds. The new opening date for individuals to file their 2013 tax returns will allow the IRS adequate time to program and test its tax processing systems. The annual process for updating IRS systems saw significant delays in October following the 16-day federal government closure...

New Michigan guidelines simplify the process of transferring residential property, including recreational property, from parents to children without "uncapping" the property value. Real property held for a long period of time may have a tax value that is substantially less than the actual value of the property. When property is transferred, and unless an exception is available, the "cap" is lifted and the taxes are increased based upon the current value of the property. This tax increase has historically resulted in a hardship for owners of substantially appreciated property, such as family cottages, desiring to pass the property to their children...

Individuals will have an extra week to enroll in coverage that will be effective starting January 1, 2014. The original deadline of December 15 has been pushed back to December 23 due to the website's recent technical difficulties. The 2014 open enrollment period (which began on October 1, 2013) has not been affected and will run through March 31, 2014. For those inquiring about 2015 coverage, the Department of Health and Human Services announced applicants can sign up starting November 15, 2014, rather than the originally planned date of October 15, 2014, and will have until January 15, 2015, rather than December 7, 2014, to complete the process...

The Obama administration announced that the online registration rollout of the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP), which was planned to accept enrollees in October 2013, has been delayed until November 2014. This decision was made so that the government could prioritize its effort to address issues with the individual health exchange. The SHOP marketplace was meant to give small businesses a more efficient way to acquire insurance coverage. The government believes that the best way to serve small employers is by utilizing an offline enrollment process...
