Tax Filing Deadline Moves to July 15, 2020

All taxpayers and businesses now have until July 15, 2020 to file their taxes, according to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who shared the news on Twitter.

“At [President Donald Trump’s] direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15,” Mnuchin said.

Taxpayers can file and make payments within this new timeframe without interest or penalties. This latest development, along with the postponement of payments previously announced earlier this week, comes as a relief to many taxpayers as they navigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although this will be beneficial for many taxpayers, we know that many of our clients are awaiting tax refunds, and we remain committed to finalizing those tax filings as quickly as possible to generate those refunds. Here at Rehmann, we remain committed to our work on all tax compliance as many state and local tax authorities have yet to announce whether they are following the IRS’ lead on this matter.
