Good news from the IRS: No penalties will be assessed against colleges, universities, and other educational institutions that filed Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) with incorrect or missing taxpayer identification numbers (TINs) for tax years 2012 – 2014. This development follows recent legislation that, effective for Form 1098-T filed after 12/31/15, waived the penalty for educational institutions that fail to file the form with accurate TINs if the educational institution certifies that it properly requested TINs from students. The IRS reminds educational institutions they still must properly solicit payee TINs. Educational institutions that were previously assessed such a penalty for 2012 will receive a letter from the IRS informing them of the waiver...
