Sam is a principal and the director of state and local tax (SALT) with Rehmann. He focuses on providing highly customized SALT services, advising clients both domestically and abroad on multistate tax issues including tax planning and tax dispute resolution; and he represents clients in the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
Prior to joining Rehmann, Sam managed his own boutique state tax consulting firm for nearly a decade. He has also worked with local, mid-sized national and “Big 4” international accounting firms serving in various roles such as senior manager and practice leader. Additionally, Sam worked for a leading oil, gas and chemical producer and a leading tier-one auto supplier. Sam has experience working with clients in a broad range of industries.
Sam is regularly asked to testify as an expert witness in tax policy in both Michigan and federal court systems. He is a frequent speaker on SALT topics, and recently received the prestigious Thomas M. Hoatlin award for his work with the Michigan Department of Treasury and Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants on behalf of taxpayers.
Sam is licensed as a CPA in both Michigan and Oklahoma.
